What exactly is athlete's foot? Athlete's foot is, as the name suggests, a fungal infection on the feet. The infection usually starts under the feet or between the toes. Athlete's foot is usually caused by dermatophytes. The dermatophytes cause infection in the skin, hair and nails. There are several types, but the most common is trichophyton rubrum. The skin under the feet becomes red and small blisters may form, and it itches. If the athlete's foot infection sits between the toes, the skin can crack open and provide easy access for secondary infections. Athlete's foot can be very troublesome, especially because we depend on using our feet. And itching under the soles of the feet is one of the last things we want. Athlete's foot often occurs when the feet are exposed to heat and moisture over a longer period of time; but the infection can also be transmitted relatively quickly in, for example, public showers. The fungal infection can be the same as that which causes an infection in the nails, so-called nail fungus. Treatment of athlete's foot infection can be difficult, but natural plant oils have traditionally proven to be effective and also without side effects.
